Dr. Gayan Udara Sampath Mohottalage is a dedicated community paediatrician and lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. With over eight years of experience in paediatric medicine, including four years specializing in community paediatrics, Dr. Mohottalage combines clinical expertise with a deep commitment to teaching and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals.

Dr. Mohottalage earned his MBBS from the University of Ruhuna, followed by an MD in Paediatrics and a Diploma in Child Health (DCH) from the University of Colombo. These qualifications have provided him with a strong foundation in paediatric care, enabling him to address the complex health needs of children, particularly those in underserved communities.

Teaching is not just a profession for Dr. Mohottalage; it is his passion. As a lecturer, he plays a crucial role in shaping the future of paediatric care by educating medical students. He is dedicated to creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that encourages critical thinking and fosters a deep understanding of paediatric medicine. Dr. Mohottalage believes that effective teaching is key to empowering students to become compassionate and skilled healthcare providers.

In his role as a community paediatrician, Dr. Mohottalage focuses on addressing the unique health challenges faced by children in community settings. Dr. Mohottalage’s research interests include cortical visual impairment (CVI), a significant cause of visual impairment in children with developmental disabilities. He is actively engaged in research aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of CVI, with the goal of enhancing early intervention strategies and treatment outcomes. His work in this area is driven by a commitment to improving the quality of life for children with visual impairments.

In addition to his research on CVI, Dr. Mohottalage is strongly interested in inclusive education. He believes that every child, regardless of their abilities, should have access to quality education in an environment that supports their individual needs. His efforts are focused on promoting inclusive policies and practices within educational settings, ensuring that all children are given the opportunity to succeed.

Child safeguarding is another area of Dr. Mohottalage’s work.
